Pumpkin Dog Biscuit Recipe

Say the word pumpkin and halloween immediately comes to mind but pumpkin goes beyond that by providing a long list of benefits for dogs. It is no wonder that so many dog treats make use of this superfood. Pumpkin provides the vitamins and minerals that give your dog a well balanced diet. It also contains antioxidants and beta carotene which helps the in prevention of cancer and reduces the buildup of inflammation in the body. The vitamin C found in pumpkin helps to promote a healthy immune system and the Vitamin E will keep your dog’s coat vibrant and shiny. Finally the high fiber content will keep your dog’s digestive system running like a well oiled machine.

Whenever you’re using canned pumpkins make sure to avoid those manufactured for use in pumpkin pies as these are loaded with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. As far as your dog is considered he will be jubilant with the taste of pumpkin treats while you will get the satisfaction in knowing that you’re giving your dog a healthy treat. Definitely a win-win situation!

Ingredients

2 cup pureed pumpkin (fresh is always better)

3 medium sized eggs
4 cups whole wheat flour (you can also use rice flour)
½  cup water

Directions

  1. Whisk the eggs in a large bowl and slowly incorporate the pureed pumpkin.
  2. Fold he flour into the mixture ½ cup at the time making sure to mix well before adding the next ½ of flour.
  3. Knead until the dough is stiff and dry then turn it out on a lightly floured surface.
  4. Roll the dough out to a ¼ inch thickness and use your dog cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
  5. Place the cut outs on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for 30-45 minutes or until the dog biscuits are brown.
  6. Once the treats are cooked to your satisfaction remove from the oven and allow to cool.
  7. Store in an airtight container.
  8. These particular treats will last for a week at room temperature or for 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator.
